Evidence basis: Company-reported Company-published assay, dated 22 October 2020. Crude quality varies from cargo to cargo; in any transaction the certificate of quality for the specific lifting governs, not a published assay.
Akpo: quality and origin
Akpo Blend is a condensate-like stream from a deepwater field about 135 km offshore, produced through an FPSO with two million barrels of storage.3 The TotalEnergies assay of October 2020 gives 46.7° API, 0.07% sulphur and a very low total acid number of 0.08.1
Naphtha and kerosene dominate: heavy naphtha (80–175 °C) alone is 27.2% by weight and residue above 375 °C only 16.1%.1 The regulator reports Akpo as condensate — 37.38 thousand b/d in May 20264 — and it sits outside Nigeria's OPEC crude quota.5
Recent developments
The Akpo West tie-back started up in February 2024, adding condensate volumes.3 The operator is TotalEnergies with a 24% interest, alongside CNOOC, Sapetro and Prime 130.3 Because TotalEnergies is an equity producer, it markets its own entitlement directly — one of the legitimate non-NNPC routes described in how Nigerian crude is sold. The France market profile shows how that equity link shapes where the barrels go.
Distillation yields
| Cut | Yield (wt%) |
|---|---|
| Light naphtha (15–80 °C) | 9 |
| Heavy naphtha (80–175 °C) | 27.2 |
| Kerosene (150–230 °C) | 19.6 |
| Gasoil (175–400 °C) | 47.1 |
| Residue (>375 °C) | 16.1 |
| Vacuum residue (>550 °C) | 4 |
Other assay values: density 793.9 kg/m³; viscosity 3.1 cSt at 10 °C; 1.4 cSt at 50 °C; nickel 1.5 and vanadium 0.1 mg/kg.1
How published figures compare
Publishers quote different qualities for Akpo because assays are run years apart on a stream whose field mix changes, and because price-reporting agencies publish rounded "typical" values. We show the figures side by side rather than silently choosing one.
